While these classes are designed for beginners, all skill levels are welcomed.
Classes meet once a week for three hours, with hands-on guidance focused on the fundamentals of wheel work. You’ll learn how to wedge, center, throw, trim, and glaze your own pottery while exploring classic clay forms.
We offer a range of cone 6 clays, including both red and white varieties, so you can experiment with different textures and looks. All Levels Wheel Pottery Classes
This course, usually 8-weeks, is designed for students of all experience levels, but with a special emphasis on helping returning or advancing potters continue to grow their skills. Beginners are absolutely welcome—you’ll learn the same core foundations of wedging, centering, throwing, trimming, and glazing—but the class is structured to challenge students who are ready to move beyond the basics.
Classes meet once a week for three hours and focus on developing stronger technique on the wheel. Students with experience will be guided into more advanced forms and methods, such as throwing larger pieces, creating sets, altering wheel-thrown shapes, refining proportions, and exploring more intentional surface design. Instruction is individualized, so whether you’re brand new or already comfortable at the wheel, you’ll be working at a pace and level that supports your personal goals.
You’ll be able to choose from a variety of cone 6 clays, including red and white options, and you’ll learn glazing techniques using the studio’s full range of cone 6 glazes. When layered correctly, these glazes create beautiful additional colors and surface effects—ideal for students looking to expand their creative toolbox. Throughout your session, you may use the studio during select times. Please check the studio calendar for open-studio hours.
Your first 25 lb. bag of clay and all firing fees are included in your class price, and additional clay is available for purchase. Students will need their own basic pottery tool kit, which can be purchased at the studio, at Clayworks Supplies in Baltimore, or online. This all-levels class is perfect for beginners who want a comprehensive introduction, as well as continuing students ready to refine, advance, and push their work further.

Handbuilding Pottery Classes
Our handbuilding class, usually 8-weeks, meets once a week for three hours and is tailored for everyone who wants to explore clay without the wheel. Whether you’re just starting out or you’ve already played a little with pinch pots and slabs, this course is built to help you grow your handbuilding skills, deepen your understanding of form, and explore expressive surface design.
In this class, you will learn the fundamental techniques of handbuilding — pinching, coiling, and slab construction — while also diving into more advanced processes when you’re ready. Beginners will build confidence working directly with clay using their hands and core tools, while more experienced potters can push into complex structures, combine techniques, and experiment with sculptural or functional forms.
We provide a wide variety of cone 6 clay (including red and white) so you can choose the body that best suits your vision. Over the session, you’ll also learn about surface decoration — how to score and slip, how to carve or stamp textures, and how to join parts thoughtfully and securely. When it comes to finishing, you’ll work with our full palette of cone 6 glazes, layering glazes in creative ways to bring out subtle color shifts, depth, and visual interest.
You’ll also get open studio access during select times — check the studio calendar to plan your creative time. Your first 25 lb. bag of clay and all firing fees are included in the class fee, and if you want to make more, additional clay is available for purchase.
Students should bring their own basic handbuilding tool kit, which you can buy from our studio, order online, or pick up at Clayworks Supplies in Baltimore.
This class is welcoming to beginners while still offering plenty of challenge for returning students who want to build on their handbuilding skills and develop their techniques further.
